Historic
Environment Record (HER)
The
Tees Archaeology Historic Environment Record (formerly
known as the Sites and Monuments Record), is our
first port of call for information on thousands
of archaeological sites, historic buildings and
shipwrecks. The HER consists of a computerised
database of 5000 archaeological sites. This database
is supported by a comprehensive series of historic
maps, aerial photographs and archives from hundreds
of excavated sites.

The
HER database underpins the entire system. It lists
everything from stray finds, such as prehistoric
axe-heads, to larger sites like medieval castles
and towns. We view the data through our Geographic
Information System (or GIS). This is a computerised
mapping facility that allows the archaeological
data to be overlain onto modern and historical
base maps. These systems allow rapid assessments
to be made to safeguard sites from development
and to provide researchers with information.
