Remains of Cistercian Nunnery. Founded in 1133 by William, son of Richard de Percy and disbanded in the Dissolution, 1539. Graves describes the site in his 1808 history, ?little of the monastic buildings remaining, except the w. end of the chapel; from which it appears to have been of considerable extent?. Ord describes the site in 1846 and mentions that no remains now exist. He summarises finds on the site made in 1830 by the owner of a cotton manufactory, which include 16 skeletons from a charnel house. A stone coffin lid with the inscription ?snake killer? and a carved sword was also found with a 4 foot long sword. A number of features of interest are retained at the site including a cross base and a millstone/water basin?.
