The remains of the Abbey of St. Mary and John the Baptist, a Premonstratensian house founded in 1198 by cannons from Easby Abbey near Richmond. A monastic church and a mixture of several periods. The west wall is the main survival of the original build east end, built in the mid-C13. The Abbey was notorious for its poverty throughout its lifetime and was exempted from taxes on a number of occasions.
