Dunsdale

At NZ 615 15186 a shaft was sunk and a winding engine erected. Workings into two pockets of ironstone left by glaciation. Ventilation of the mine was by a furnace shaft. Two rows of cottages forming the village of Dunsdale were part of the mine property. Traces of the drift and buildings remain with parts of the railbed in the Dunsdale area leading to the top of the incline. Owen described the mine as ?screened from the road by trees, its bricked arch dismal and forlorn. Until a few years ago a chimney stood nearby which, in conjunction with a shaft and furnace built in the workings, had served to ventilate the mine. There was also a powder magazine but now all traces are gone'. The mine was opened in 1872 under direction of the Newcomen family of Kirkleatham Estate. The mine was not a particular success and was abandoned on the 31st December 1886.
