Elwick, Medieval fishponds

Medieval fishpond. Large rectangular pond estimated to be up to 1m deep with two wildfowl islands. The southern exit from the pond leads to a long arm which has a right angle at its southern end forming another arm leading to the west. There is another right angle turn with the pond petering out. Possible sluice positions are indicated on the first arm. The eastern side of the pond has a bank which overlies the ridge and furrow suggesting that the area was under plough when the fishponds were first built.
