Thorpe Thewles : Further Information Around about the time of the Roman Conquest of Northern Britain, the settlement appears to have been abandoned, probably in favour of a more sheltered location close to running water, leaving the site to be forgotten until its re-discovery in 1976. The excavations at Thorpe Thewles have examined an almost complete fossilized landscape of Iron Age date and the evidence found has greatly enhanced our modern day understanding of this distant period of north-east settlement.
