Historic Environment Record

The Tees Archaeology Historic Environment Record (formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record), is our first port of call for information on thousands of archaeological sites, historic buildings and shipwrecks.

The Historic Environment Record (HER) consists of a computerised database of thousands of archaeological sites. This database is supported by a comprehensive series of historic maps, aerial photographs and archives from hundreds of excavated sites.

The HER database underpins the entire system. It lists everything from stray finds, such as prehistoric axe-heads, to larger sites like medieval castles and towns. We view the data through our Geographic Information System (or GIS).

GIS is a computerised mapping facility that allows the archaeological data to be overlain onto modern and historical maps. These systems allow rapid assessments to be made to safeguard sites from development and to provide researchers with information.
