Public Services

Tees Archaeology is one of the country’s leading archaeological services with a national reputation for excellence.

We have provided a high quality, professional service to people and businesses across the Teesside area and further afield for over 25 years. The service recently undertook a Best Value Review and received a maximum score of two, three-star awards.

The service currently has six permanent members of staff and draws on the expertise of local freelance archaeologists for particular projects.

Administratively we are a shared service of the four unitary authorities of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees. Hartlepool is our lead authority and the service is based at Sir William Gray House in the centre of the town.

The Service has four main activity areas and applies the highest professional standards in each of them. The activity areas are:

Collections Management

Conservation Archaeology

Education and Public Archaeology

Research and Fieldwork
