General LinksCouncil for British Archaeology The CBA is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations. English Heritage exists to protect and promote England's spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood.
English Heritage is working in collaboration with ALGAO and IHBC in a five year project to build a Heritage Gateway to England's local and national historic environment records. British History Online is the digital library containing some of the core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles. Created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust, they aim to support academic and personal users around the world in their learning, teaching and research. RESCUE, the British Archaeological Trust, is a registered charity and an independent organisation committed to the protection, conservation, recording and interpretation of archaeological evidence. UK archaeology site with latest jobs, news and resources, forum and library, also with help for developers in Britain, hosted by the British Archaeological Jobs Resource. Gateway to over 2,500 museums, galleries and heritage attractions.
Regional LinksCaptain James Cook - 1728-1779 Discover the story of Captain James Cook through the outstanding collections of the British Library linked with material held in institutions such as the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in the North East of England. The Museum of Early Medieval Northumbria at Jarrow, Bede's World celebrates the extraordinary life and achievements of the Venerable Bede (AD 673 - 735). Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and civilian settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian's Wall. The regional local studies site for the north-east of England. The virtual archaeology of Durham and Northumberland. This website provides access to a complete record of the archaeology of the two counties of Durham and Northumberland, from the smallest prehistoric flint to the largest medieval castle. The website is continually updated with new information and images. An archaeological project, set up in 1996, to investigate the archaeology and history of the Bamburgh area in Northumberland. This website is the celebration of rock carvings made by Neolithic and Early Bronze Age people in Northumberland in the north east of England, between 6000 and 3500 years ago. The website is also a celebration of the work of Stan Beckensall who has spent 40 years finding and recording this ancient rock art. This site is based on the Historic Environment Record (HER) maintained by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
