Events

Please note that events will be added during the year so please continue to re-visit the site.

Guided Walks

Each walk will last for approximately one and a half to two hours. They are free and all are welcome. Please ensure that you wear suitable clothing.

Details about these walks can also be found in the leaflets of the Countryside Services of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton

Open Days

These provide an opportunity to visit an archaeological site or project or to meet Tees Archaeology staff. They are free and all are welcome.

Projects

These are fieldwork projects which might involve excavation or other types of fieldwork. Attendance is free and anybody over 18 is welcome to take part. A booking system is in place for these and special conditions may apply.

Please contact Tees Archaeology well in advance if you wish to volunteer for a project.

Medieval Yarm Guided Walk

Discover the medieval town and find out if there was ever a castle at Yarm.

This 2 hour guided walk will be led by Robin Daniels.

No pre-booking is necessary, please meet at Yarm Town Hall at 9.50am.

North Yorkshire Mesolithic Project

A 2 week excavation and survey project.

The project will consist of shovel pitting and test pitting looking for Mesolithic flint scatters in order to try and identify settlement.

Saturday 7th August - Tuesday 10th August 2010 The Tall Ships Races 2010 - Hartlepool

HARTLEPOOL will be centre stage when it hosts The Tall Ships Races 2010 in August.

Labelled England's biggest free event this year, organisers are pulling out all the stops to make sure it is a huge success and lives in people's memories for years to come.

Up to one million visitors are expected to attend the four-day jamboree.

The ships are expected to arrive in Hartlepool on Saturday 7 August after sailing from Kristiansand in Norway in the second and final race.

They will stay until Tuesday 10 August when they will bid a grand farewell in an impressive Parade of Sail.

August Thornaby Medieval Fair

A Step Back In Time

Guided Walks to be led by Tees Archaeology at 1.30pm and 3.00pm to explain the medieval points of interest of the village of Thornaby.

The Church will be open and the Vicar will be there so that people can look around the church.

Refreshments are available.

Threads of time will be doing story telling & working leather & textiles.

 

The Museum service plan medieval craft activities and the Countryside Rangers plan to set up a pole laith for demonstrations and supervised participation.

Please meet near the St Peter ad Vincular church on Thornaby Village Green (down the side of the Odd Fellows Restaurant on Thornaby Road) between 1pm and 4pm 

There is no parking for this event and anyone wishing to attend will need to use public transport or arrive on foot.

Stainton / Thornton Guided Walk

Enjoy a gentle walk to discover the historic villages of Stainton and Thornton.

Archaeology experts will be on the walk to explain more about the communities that once lived in the ancient villages and point out the hidden history in the landscape.  

The walk will include a visit to the churchyard of St. Peter and St. Paul.  

The walk will be approximately 3 miles so please wear comfortable walking shoes, come prepared for all weathers and bring a drink and snack.

The walk will be led by Tees Archaeology and countryside staff from Middlesbrough Council.

Meet at Hemlington Lake Recreation Centre at 10.20 am

Monday 27th September - Friday 1st October 2010 Hart Village Building Recording Project

Tees Archaeology are returning to the village of Hart, near Hartlepool to record the buildings of the 1930-50s around Hart including structures dating from WWII.

Robin Daniels will be directing the project and volunteers are required to help.

Volunteers will record and photograph structures. The working day will be 9am – 4pm.

Survey work only - no excavation.

Saturday 2nd October 2010 Hart Village Building Recording - OPEN DAY

A chance to view the results of A building recording project in and around Hart and to find out more about the heritage of the village.

The event will be held in St Mary Magdalene Church, Hart.

From 12 – 4.00pm

Monday 4th October - Friday 8th October 2010 Eston Hills Project

Tees Archaeology will be undertaking their third season of fieldwork at the Eston Hills.

Based at the Flatts Lane Visitors Centre this will involve identification of the varied archaeological sites that litter the hills with selected measured survey of features of interest. 

The work involves walking over uneven and steep terrain. 

There will be no excavation involved.

Project will be directed by Peter Rowe.

Stockton Town Centre Building Recording Project

A one week survey recording the historic building of Stockton.

Robin Daniels will be leading this project and volunteers are required to assist.
