Quarry Farm Romano-British Villa,

Ingleby Barwick

Prior to the building of the modern housing development at Ingleby Barwick, archaeological excavation was carried out by Archaeological Services University of Durham to record elements of a Romano-British villa.

The villa is one of the most northerly in Britain, perched on a terrace overlooking the south bank of the river Tees. The villa is important, not only in the fact that it was a rare opportunity to excavate a villa in Northern Britain, but has also provided invaluable cultural and economic evidence from a time when the region was part of the Roman imperial frontier.
