Medieval Hartlepool

Hartlepool Headland is located in the north-east of England on a ridge of limestone. The Headland has cliffs to the east and south and a slope to the harbour on the west. Hartlepool had a natural bay which made the town ideal to become a port.

Hartlepool’s natural harbour first became a port in the early medieval period. In the 12 th century it was founded by the De Brus family and the port soon expanded and became a major site. Hartlepool’s port was used as a base for the English Fleet during the Scottish Wars and was a defensive barrier in the First World War.
