Lane Head Farm, Liverton Moor

Lane Head Farm, Liverton Moor

Picture : 1 of  3 | Next Picture >

Large complex of enclosures on moorland to the south of Lane Head Farm, Liverton Moor identified from aerial photographs.

The enclosure system is to the east of a beck gorge. There a three main blocks of enclosures described here as north, middle and south. The north enclosure is sub-rectangular and well defined on all but the west side. On the west side is a subsidiary or overlying enclosure that is a stretched D-shape, with the flat side to the north. The middle enclosure lies immediately south of this and shares the north enclosure's southern boundary as its northern limit. It has a curved east side, straight south side and undefined west side. This middle enclosure is sub-divided with at least two small paddocks. It is overlain by very straight and narrow ploughing. To the south of the middle enclosure there is marsh ground which is drained to the beck to the west. To the south of the marsh ground is a third, separate, enclosure with very positive boundaries on its north and west sides. The ground falls away to the south and east. A short distance to the south are two ring ditches and a further enclosure.

In addition, there is a circular ring ditch identified from aerial photographs taken in 1998. The ring ditch is approximately 22 metres in diameter. It occupies a ridge where a small moorland beck diverges in to two separate courses. It lies to the south of an undated enclosure complex and north of a second enclosure.
