 Castle Cottages (Kilton) Fishpond

(Tees. Arch. HER No. 1597)

To the north east of Kilton Castle, just outside the Castle Woods, are the remains of two Medieval fishponds.

This nucleated set of two elongated fishponds of similar proportions arranged in an L-shape was part of the Kilton Castle estate. Only the east-to-west pond survives to any extent measuring approximately 75m by 10m, whereas the north-to-south pond survives mainly as soil marks in aerial photography.

There are no apparent supply and outlet channels although there was possibly a sluice between the two ponds.
