High Burntoft

High Burntoft

< Previous Image | Picture : 3 of  3

High Burntoft is of medieval origin, with a series of earthworks surrounding the modern farm. The earthworks consist of ridge and furrow, trackways, field boundaries and ponds. The present farm buildings are C19th and have destroyed any traces of former medieval house platforms. The present ridge and furrow field system appears later than medieval in date but undoubtedly follows a more ancient pattern of ploughing. A large number of ponds have been built into the surrounding fields. Those ponds to the north of the farm may have originally served as fish ponds.
