Dimitris
On the night of December 14th, 1953, the Greek steamship ‘Dimitris’ ran aground on the East Scar Rocks at Redcar. The following day, salvage experts examined the ship, but found she was too badly damaged to be refloated and the decision was taken to scrap her where she lay. Over the next few years, the vessel was slowly dismantled and dispersed. Today, her underwater remains have become home to a wide range of marine life, making her a very popular dive site with many local and visiting scuba-divers. In 2001, a local branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club, ‘Cleveland Divers’, formally ‘adopted’ the wreck, acting as unofficial custodians and monitoring changes to the condition of the remains. The ‘Dimitris’ is just one of over 1500 known shipwrecks off the Teesside coast. |
