Public
Services
Tees
Archaeology is one of the country’s premiere
archaeological services with a national reputation
for excellence.
We
have provided a high quality, professional service
to people and businesses across the Teesside area
and further a field for over 25 years. The service
recently undertook a Best Value Review and received
a maximum score of two three star awards.
The
service currently has seven permanent members
of staff and draws on the expertise of local freelance
archaeologists for particular projects.
Administratively
we are a shared service of the four unitary authorities
of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland
and Stockton-on-Tees. Hartlepool is our lead authority
and the service is based at Sir William Gray House
in the centre of the regenerated town.
The
Service has five main activity areas and applies
the highest professional standards in each of
them. The activity areas are:
Collections
Management – the care of artefacts
and records held by the service on behalf of our
partners.
Conservation
Archaeology – the compilation
and enhancement of the Sites and Monuments Record
(SMR) and the provision of conservation advice
to developers, planners and landowners.
Education
and Public Archaeology – the
provision of information about archaeology and
allowing opportunities for involvement in archaeology.
Management
and Administration
Research
and Fieldwork – planning and
executing archaeological projects including public
participation and research excavations and commercial
fieldwork for our many and varied clients.
