Cockfield Fell, industry and enclosure

earthwork enclosures on Cockfield Fell. This earthwork is sited on open ground which slopes slightly from north to south. It consists of a ditch with an inner rampart and outer bank enclosing an area c.60m. east-west and c.60m. north-west. An extensive area of prehistoric enclosures and medieval industrial remains. Amongst these the Vavasours Coal mine on Cockfield Fell, mentioned in 1375, is the first inland colliery upon record.
