Hutton Magna

First recorded as Hotune in the Domesday book of AD 1086, the name probably originates in the Anglo-Saxon for a farm or toft on a hill or heugh. The addition of the suffix Magna incorporates the church latin for large or great and differentiates the village from the hamlet of Little Hutton a kilometre or so to the East which is also recorded in the Domesday Book. A small area of village shrinkage can be seen around and predominantly to the South of the church at Hutton Magna and lies between the main linear portion of the settlement and the manor house.
