High Grindon

May 1988. The earthworks consist of a series of banks and ditches forming small enclosures which terminate in a hollow way running along the east and north sides. The construction of the grass covered banks is not visible, but they appear to represent raised house platforms and the boundaries of surrounding enclosures. The obscure manor of Grindon was probably carved out of the Neville's lordship of Preston-le-Skerne. Surtees traces its ownership from 1561. The site is still visible from the air and presumably still survives in badly damaged form beneath the ploughed surface of the field.
