Castle Eden

View over Castle Eden's chapel, castle and Medieval village. The castle is a rebuilt country house of 1765 by William Newton for Rowland Burdon. Altered and given Gothic detailing by Sir John Soane around 1780. The present church of St. James, is a building of the C18th, but was said to be 'rebuilt from its old foundations 'in 1764.The original church was erected c.1150 and stood until 1764. The deserted Medieval village seems to have been placed between the castle and the church.
