Rey Cross marching camp

A well-preserved Roman marching-camp near the summit of Stainmore. The site predates the Roman road, and is therefore pre-Agricolan. The south west corner has been damaged during mineral extraction, but the site is otherwise intact, with well marked entrances and tutuli. Partly excavated in 1990 in advance of A66 road widening. Two trenches in the internal area revealed stake holes and three trenches across the ramparts exposed the structure.
