July 1985. General view over settlement and Bowes Castle. Note the Norman keep of three floors is in the north west angle of the Roman fort, and had an isolating ditch to the south and west. Building started in 1171 and was completed in 1187 The castle was built for Henry II to the design of Richard the Ingeniator. The keep was apparently the only masonry building and is in part constructed of re-used Roman materials from the fort. The main entrance was at first floor level, which also contained the main hall and kitchen, seemingly a unique arrangement. There are traces of an inner and outer bailey to the south. There are also traces of a Roman bath house to the outer limits of the fort.
